Just like in all the latter Zelda games, they are used for attacking enemies and removing cracked walls in the original game as well. Be careful however, Link can only carry a total of eight bombs at a time. Be sure to use them wisely! Bombs will appear throughout Hyrule when you defeat enemies, and they are also available in many shops as well.
