1.Defination of Osteoporosis
Is a disease that thins and weakens the normally strong,
dense,mineral-rich material that bone is made of. As the diseased bones loss density,
they also lose the solid streght they need to support the body's weight. So a person with osteoporosis is more likely to break, or fracture, a bone during a fall or accident : Most such fractures occur in the spine, hip, or wrist.
In USA more than 1.5 million bone fractures from osteoporosis occur every year, mostly in older women.
2.Symptoms of Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is sometimes called a silent disease because it usually cause no symptoms for a long time. In fact, a fracture may be the first sign of osteoporosis that has silently reached an advanced stage. It's belived that more than 23 millon American women over age 50 have a high risk of osteoporosis fractures.
Occasionally,however,
less advanced osteoporosis may signal its presence with muscle or bone pain, particularly in the back. Note : Most back pain is caused by muscle strain or other conditions such as arthritis,
not by osteoporosis.
3.Prevention
Many people are at risk for osteoporosis. But this disease is not an inevtable part of growing older, and everyone who doesn't yet have it is in a position to prevent it. So whatever your risk for this disease is, if you don't have it now, taking preventive steps will lower your risk of developing it.
Osteoporosis prevention is based on the fact that this disease usually occurs slowly over time. A healthy, nonsmoking lifestyle --with regular exercise and a diet that's low in fat and includes recommended amounts of calcium (1000-
1500 mg a day) and vitamin D (at least 400 units a day) --
goes a long way toward building healthy bones.
Fortunately,it's never too late in life to start getting the bone-
preserving effects of calcium and vitaminD supplementation. In women entering menopause, hormone replacement(estrogen
) therapy can cut the risk of spine and hip fractures by 50% and increase bone density by upto 10% in the spine and 5% in the hips. The earlier estrogen therapy is begun, the more bone will be preserved.
Women who are at high risk for osteoporosis or over age 65 should consider having regular bone mineral density (BMD) tests to monitor their rate of bone loss. BMD testing is painless, noninvasive and save.
4. treatment Considerations
An effective treatment program for osteoporosis will typically include calcium and vitaminD supplementation,
appropriate lifestyle change, an exercise program, and safety precautions to avoid falls and prevent fractures. The doctor may also prescribe a meditation to slow or stop bone loss or to increase bone density. As always, consult your doctor if you think you may need osteoporosis treatment or preventive theraoy.
Ensuring adequate daily intake of calcium and vitaminD(necessary for the body's absorption of calcium) is usually a first priority in preventing fractures due to osteoporosis. A calcium supplement may be recommended. Smoking should be stopped and caffeine/alcohol consumption should be reduced because this will improve the outlook for osteoporosis treatment.
