The Family
Feminist Perspective
Radical Feminist Approach
Many feminists see the family as the central location of women?s oppression
Men benefit from families, while women do not.
Even when women work they have little decision making autonomy.
The family as an economic system - Delphy and Leonard 1992
Family members work for the head of the household.
Work that is not in the labour market.
Women still do more housework than men.
Women are still the main care givers for not just children but the elderly and the sick.
Women are expected to provide moral support for men. To men who give little support to their wife?s work.
Radical feminists are attacking the gender prescriptions that are inherent in the discourse of the family.
Governments that reinforce the ?Family? in the normative sense are seen to be backing the oppression of women.
Activities and ideas designed to reproduce and strengthen the nuclear family form are viewed as cultural and social weapons to subordinate women.
This system reinforces ?Patriarchy? or ?Rule by Men?.
For many feminists the source of the oppression is the ?heterosexual? partnership
Radical feminists argue that the life within the family is there to reinforce, male dominance.
Arguing that the ?personal is the political?.
A. Rich talks of the ?compulsory heterosexuality? that underpins male-
female relationships in the nuclear family.
This ?normalizes? heterosexuality.
Why should penetrative sex, which involves the male exploiting the body of women, be said to be natural while other forms of sexuality are not seen as normal.
Penetrative sex is seen as a power relationship.
Women?s bodies are colonized or occupied, taken over by men.
For radical feminists this leads directly to physical and mental violence.
Separatism
The solution to patriarchy.
Women should live separate lives from men.
By doing so women can be liberated from patriarchy.
Living lesbian lives and freeing themselves from seeing only penetrative sex as being normal.
Love and affection may be a precondition for individual happiness.
Why must we assume that it can only be experienced by adults involved in a stable, monogamous, heterosexual union.
Sexual deviance is viewed as perverted, fetishes, or abnormal.
Gay and Lesbian Relationships
The predominant challenge to the nuclear family is believed to be sexual orientation.
Gay families also have - permanence, private family property, commitment to a permanent relationship.
Gay liberation and feminist movement have enabled individuals to ?come out?. Open declare their homosexuality and live together.
A time of liberation and tension.
Is the family under threat from homosexuality?
The acceptance or rejection of the conventional family model varies with the political stance of the partners.
