Intensive Revision Lecture 4

Anthony Giddens and the Family (1999)

Globalisation and Personal Rights

Massive drop in the birth rate all over Europe ? this is also true for Singapore. The family is undergoing a process of restructuring.

As of 1999, four countries have or are legitimizing homosexual marriage.

Where is the family going and how is this effected by sexuality, emotional relationships and changing relationships between the sexes? These are fundamental questions in the globalisation debate.

Two Opposed Versions of the Family

Defenders of the ?traditional family?.

Liberals, family diversity is helpful and necessary in a modern society.

?Traditional Family?

Defenders of the traditional family tend to be on the political right.

See homosexual marriages as scandalous and ?unnatural?.

The have an analysis of the past that includes the notion that at one time the ?traditional family? was functioning well.

No fault divorce, is to blame.

Liberals

Diversity and proliferation of family forms is linked to the diversification of individual life.

Helpful and necessary.

This is to be welcomed and encouraged.

What are the changes affecting the family?

No longer fixed gender roles.

And marriage is now a personal choice on behalf of the couple involved.

Now you can set up a relationship with someone of the same sex.

The traditional family was an economic unit, having children was an advantage ? agrarian societies.

Having a child in the west is no longer a benefit ? 100.000 pounds sterling for a child between the age of 1 and 18.

Having a child is a decision.

In traditional societies women were the property of their husbands.

Patriarchy.

?Children should be seen and not heard?

Male power and the ?dark side? of the family.

In some societies now, children can divorce their parents.
