Michel Foucault
Supports Weber?s argument ? concrete as opposed to abstract.
Control of information
Surveillance Society
Weber felt that state bureaucracies were very inefficient and that they should not be allowed to ?penetrate the market?.
Soviet Union and Eastern Europe failed ? In terms of socialist states Weber was correct. ?Market??
Michel Foucault shows us that bureaucracy has spread beyond government organizations.
ยง Criticism of Weber
Weber has made a great contribution but -
1. Methodological Individualism ?
?Weber was willing to treat all social forces and pressures as if they could be explained (or reduced) to the actions and purposes of seemingly isolated individuals? (Lee and Newby, 1983)
2. He gives a lot of what causes social change to individuals and motivated action ? yet bureaucracies are supposed to severely restrict human action.
3. Clegg 1992 argues that bureaucratic organisations are no longer the norm. Organisations are supposedly more flexible.
4. In modern societies people can now question the ends to which an organisation is working. Ray and Reed 1994 argue that there could be an increasing emphasis on democratic control of organisational ends.
Weber?s contribution has been enormous and has shaped the debates on organisations and bureaucracy ever since.
