Although attempts have been made to link Mother's Day to ancient cults of the mother goddess, especialy the worship of Cybele, the association is more conceptual than historic.Mother's Day is a moderm, American invention. Its creator was Anna M.Jarvis (1864~1948), a West virginia schoolteacher whose lifelong devotion to her own mother was augmented by what she saw as the ill treatment of many elders by their children. When her mother died in 1905, Jarvis undertook a letter- writing campaign, petitioning ministers, businessmen, and congressmen to support the idea of a national day set aside to honor mothers. Three years later, her persistence paid off, as churches in her hometown of Grafton and iin Philadelphia, where she then lived, held observances on May 10, one day after the anniversary of her mother's death. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to proclaim a national day of observance, and within a year the rest of the union followed suit. Anna Jarvis was fifty years old, in 1914, when she saw her project become a national holiday:In that year Pesident Woodrow Wilson estabilshed the second Sunday in May as the date.
