The custom of haging stockings on a mantel in anticipation of small presents is believed to have started as a kind of mercenary homage to St. Nicholas, the Turkish progenitor of our Santa Claus. Of the many stories told about the kindness of St. Nick, one very popular one has him providing dowries for the three daughters of an impoverished nobleman by throwing bags of money through their windows or, in some versions of the tale, dropping them down the chimney. As Maymie Krythe (1954)recounts the story, one of these down -the -chimney gifts happened to fall into a stocking that was hung to dry by the fire;hence our custom of hanging stockings in the same place.
