In a statement, received by the Palestinian government in Ramallah, the government of Japan called on Israel to reconsider immediately such a settlement plan, saying that once the construction takes place, it would negatively impact current peace-making efforts.
"Such a unilateral action would raise unwanted controversy over the final peace settlement; therefore, we look forward that it would not deject momentum of the peace drive. At any rate, such an action would be unhelpful to peace-
making", read the statement.
The Japanese foreign ministry looked forward to observing peace between the Palestinians and Israelis in the near future, so that prosperity will be created.
The official statement called on both sides to maintain restraint in order to avert more deterioration on the ground, which in turn would hamper any peaceful agreement.
Japan's stance came after Israel re-
announced a bid to build about 300 housing units in the Israeli settlement of Abu Ghonaim hilltop (Har Homa), on the occupied lands of east Jerusalem, which Palestinians want their future capital.
The declaration has been branded by Washington as ' an impediment to peace',
after Washington brought Israelis and Palestinians closer in last November's peace meet in Annapolis, Maryland, United States.
