DAMASCUS
The Hamas Movement has affirmed Sunday that the Israeli decision to expand settlements in the occupied city of Jerusalem should prompt PA chief Mahmoud Abbas to rethink his negotiations with the Israelis, and to return to his Palestinian people.
Few days after the ill-fated Annapolis conference where Israeli premier Ehud Olmert pledged to start peace negotiations with the Palestinians, the Israeli occupation government offered a number of tenders to construct 300 settlement units in the occupied city of Jerusalem.
"The persistent Israeli settlement projects in Jerusalem constituted big blow to the Annapolis conference and to those who organized and attended it after they portrayed the gathering as the Salvation stick to the Palestinian people and their just cause", the Movement asserted in a statement it issued and a copy of which was obtained by the PIC.
The Movement also underlined that the Israeli decision was clear undermining to international appeals and calls to halt construction of settlements in the occupied Palestinian lands, and unsolicited embarrassment to Abbas and his retinue who preferred to set and talk with the Israelis rather than settling inter-
Palestinian differences with their Palestinian brethrens.
"This oppressive and aggressive decision confirms that the enemy's leaders were and still are persistent in their atrocities against the unarmed Palestinian people at a time they talk much about peace projects in clear deception and misleading of the international community.
Moreover, the Movement underscored that the decision proved beyond reasonable doubt that betting on the US-administration was "a big loss" because the US administration was and still allying itself with the Zionist entity.
The US administration only asked "some clarifications" from the Israeli occupation government about the decision, but it didn’t blame Israel for taking such a decision.
"We hope that the Israeli decision will serve as a good lesson to Palestinian parties that gasped behind the mirage of peace with Israel to as they must now rethink their stands,
to return to sanity,
to correct direction of the compass, to return to the Palestinian mainstream, and to consolidate ranks in confronting the Israeli enemy", the Movement highlighted.
