The caretaker government strongly denounced PA chief Mahmoud Abbas for his insistence on meeting with Israeli premier Ehud Olmert, considering the aim of such meetings is to liquidate the Palestinian cause and harm the national project.

In a press release, Taher Al-Nunu, the spokesman for the caretaker government, stated that in every meeting with the Israeli side, Abbas claims that he will discuss key Palestinian issues such as the issues of Palestinian prisoners and the apartheid wall, but what happens is more Israeli excavations under the Aqsa mosque, more settlement outposts and more aggressions against the Palestinian people.

The spokesman quoted some media outlets as saying that Israel demanded Abbas to maintain the isolation between the West Bank and Gaza as a condition for allowing him to meet with Olmert.

For his part, Dr. Mustafa Al- Barghouthi, a PLC member and the secretary-general of the Palestinian national initiative, confirmed that the Annapolis conference is doomed to failure in light of the dictates and preconditions that Israel attempts to impose on the PA, warning that the Israeli side is actually working on converting the PA into a security institution working on behalf of the Israeli occupation.

Dr. Barghouthi stated that the PA meetings with the Israeli side failed to make any change in Israel's positions which insist on removing core Palestinian issues from the negotiations of permanent solution through demanding the PA to recognize Israel as a Jewish state with aim of repealing the right of Palestinian refugees to return and making the fate of one million and a half Palestinians living inside the green line unknown.

The lawmaker added that the IOA also refuses to withdraw fully to the1967 borders and seeks to turn the Jerusalem issue to a mere issue of neighborhoods, it also refuses to withdraw from the eastern Jerusalem and demands the unilateral application of the roadmap plan with the aim of deepening discord and division in the Palestinian arena.

The lawmaker called on the PA leadership to speak frankly to the Palestinian people about what is really going on and to set clear requirements for the Annapolis conference, most importantly that Israel must stop its settlement activities and building the apartheid wall, retreat from classifying the Gaza Strip as a hostile entity, lift the siege on it and recognize the need to solve all final status issues.
